There are three main characters in Mrs. Dalloway: Clarissa, Peter, and Septimus. It is possible to follow each character through the day that is this story.

Clarissa Dalloway spends the preparing for the party that she will be throwing in the evening. She remembers her life 30 odd years ago and thinks of the decisions she made. Clarissa spends the day flopping between the past and the present.

Peter Walsh, fresh from 5 years in India, comes to visit the women he once wanted to marry-Clarissa. After meeting with her, he thinks about the past and what has happened since that time.

Septimus Warren Smith is a World War I veteran that is going insane.
